An Internet business could be the ideal way for you to get out of
the rat race. Many types of online businesses require little startup
cash and you can easily start the business in your spare time, ramping
it up until you are generating enough income to quit your day job. Part
of your success, however, lies in choosing the right business to start.
Types of Businesses
Choose an Internet business that fits your personality. For
example, you could become a blogger or website creator, start an
e-commerce site selling items, sell items through a site like eBay, act
as an affiliate for other products or sell your own information
products. Each of these is a viable business model, but you need to
determine your goals. If you enjoy writing, blogging may be the way to
go. If you don't have the space to store items, it's smarter to work as a
company's affiliate rather than build your own e-commerce site.
Finding Niche
In your Internet business, you are often competing with some big
players, such as Amazon. To set yourself apart, it's smart to focus on a
small niche of interested people. If you enjoy model trains, your
business could be all about model trains, selling new and antique
models. As your reputation grows, you become the go-to site for train
information and more customers will buy from you than a large retailer.

Keyword Research
Keywords are the words that people enter into the search engines
when they need a product or information. Your goal is to have your site
listed in the top search engines results -- more visitors to your site
means more sales. However, take care to look for "buying keywords," or
the words that people are searching for when they want to make a
purchase. You are not likely to make a sale with someone searching for
"information on widgets," but you are if the person searches for "buy
widgets."
Increasing Traffic
The more traffic you have to your site, the more potential sales
you can make. Aside from your site ranking in the search engines, you
can get more traffic by purchasing ads in search results or on related
websites. When purchasing advertising, the ads should only be on sites
that relate to your target audience. Otherwise, you're wasting your
money. You can also gain more traffic by networking with other sites
that relate or complement your own site. For example, you might write a
piece for a well-known blog and include a link to your site at the end.
Mobile Sites
Smartphones that include the iPhone are becoming a popular way
for people to access the Internet on the go. In addition to your regular
site, you should also design a site for mobile use. This allows you to
reach a wider customer base.
